What Are the Different Kinds of Packing Foam?
Moving house and want to know what the best and most affordable packing material is? Wonder no more, continue reading if you want to know more.
The likes of packing peanuts, expanded polystyrene sheets, foam-in-place, and foam-in-bag, are all types of foam used to secure items when packed. Both expanded polystyrene and peanuts are made from polystyrene. The foam-in-place and foam-in-bag are made also from polyurethane, and each of these is best suited to protect a specific type of product during shipment.
Expanded polystyrene, or EPS for short, is often referred to as styrofoam. However, this is a trademarked product from the Dow Company. And as such, should never be confused with other EPS products. This is a lightweight, rigid, plastic foam which is made by expanding small polystyrene beads. Unfortunately, it has only minimal cushioning properties and is best suited for lightweight items.
Packing peanuts often referred to as loose-fill, are lightweight, peanut-shaped foam which is designed to interlock when compressed and flow freely when left loose. The interlocking shape will allow it to cushion items being shipped. And as such, they will often be used to fill up empty spaces around products that are being shipped. These peanuts will not keep products in place, meaning they should not be used with any products which shift and move while in transit. They can also generate static electricity, and should not be used when shipping the likes of electronic equipment.
If you are looking for more shock absorbing power, polyurethane is the way to go. It is either flexible or rigid and can be made in sheets, foam-in-place, or as foam-in-bags. When it is made into sheets, this foam can be either soft flat sheets or egg-crate looking sheets. The latter will allow the polyurethane to interlock and offers a cushion for the product being shipped.
